I see so many DIY’s. And I gotta be honest – I can be crafty & handy like that – it’s just sometimes I don’t have the patience or the time.
BUT, when I saw this Mekdes leather jacket worn from one of my FAVORITE bloggers, Jessie, of Seams For A Desire, I NEEDED it. If you’re not checking out her blog, you should! I am inspired by her posts all the time.
After seeing her jacket, I became obsessed with it. I visited her page to look at that jacket EVERYDAY. I LONGED for it. I PINED for it. I NEEDED it. This is what happens when you’re addicted to fashion. Atlas, it’s not sold in the United States!
My only choice was to try a DIY!
It’s still in progress, but it’s starting to come along. Here is the jacket I started with – a Wilson’s Leather jacket – circa 1980′s or 1990′s. I LOVED the shape and the 80′s/90′s feel. AND, it was only $22.00 from Lost and Found, a local thrift shop in South Minneapolis.
I picked up some safety pins and studs:
And then I attached them to the jacket, placing them along both sides of the zipper:
BELOW LEFT: My jacket, still in progress
BELOW RIGHT: Jessie’s jacket from her blog, Seams For a Desire (my inspiration photo)
I knew I was on the right track when I gave my daughter a peek at the jacket and she SQUEALED and said OM MY GOD! I WANT ONE! YOU HAVE TO DO ONE FOR ME! And when she heard I was going to add some zebra stripes? She SWOONED. Like mother, like daughter. I told her she could borrow mine…
Now I’m on the hunt for some green zebra fabric to attach! Or do you think I should do fabric paint? Any suggestions on the Zebra stripes?
What do you think? Love it or leave it?

PS – I’m TOTALLY BANANAS over leather, studs and animal prints!

I definitely love it!! Nice job on the fabulous DIY project! I’d say go for zebra print fabric. I can’t wait to see the final product!

It looks great so far! I am not crafty like this at all, well really I just don’t have patience, I like instant satisfaction, but I think the fabric would work better than the paint. It would probably end up lasting longer maybe? Either way, what a fun project! Heather
Thanks heather – I’m usually not very patience either! BUT, they don’t sell this jacket in the US! What’s a girl to do?

Oooo!! I love being crafty!
Not really certain what’s available to you, but Walmart had some colorful zebra print….though not all stores still carry fabric. Check out the acessories area because you may find a bandana or scarf that will suit your needs. (Thinkin’ outta da box!) Micheals Craft Stores may have something in their apparel section that will work too.
Can’t wait to see the finished product!
Great work dear!
