Fly Fishing on the River Bighorn in Montana!

Home» Casual Outfits » Fly Fishing on the River Bighorn in Montana!

I’m a girly-girl through and through. And the thought of fly-fishing? Well let’s say it hasn’t really crossed my mind much. But when my husband wanted ME to go on a vacation with HIM – in the WILD WILD west, where we would fly fish, I thought, Why not? I LOVE that man, and I wanted to see him smile from ear to ear, enjoying the things he enjoyed most, and capturing those moments in pictures, as it’s so hard to get him to agree to be on camera, let alone SMILE on camera!

We spent a whole day on the River Bighorn, in Fort Smith, Montana. It was a BEAUTIFUL day, temps in the high 80’s, just a slight wind here and there, and a few fluffy clouds in the sky – perfect day for fly-fishing!

We were on the river by 9:00AM, and hubby was quiet serious about the up-coming activities for the day – fish, fish and more fishing!

He was trying to stay away from the camera, but when you’re on a 3-person fishing boat, there’s really no escaping me. He tried his best not to look my way:

But as soon as he caught his first trout, smiles everywhere!

I’ve never done any fly-fishing, and wouldn’t you know it? I caught on pretty darn quickly!

On this trip, we had a guide, Peter. A guide’s job is to make your fishing experience fun and memorable. He rows the boat, he shows you all the best fishing spots, he educates you on fish behavior & psychology, and most importantly for me, he does all the things that girly-girls don’t particularly enjoy – like taking the moss off when I catch moss, untangling my lines, and most importantly, taking the fish off the hook and releasing it! Who really wants to have to touch the fish, you know? Peter did a great job of making sure I enjoyed myself so that I would want to come back fly-fishing with my hubby! You know the saying, Happy Wife, Happy Life? YEP.

Here I am NOT TOUCHING the trout I just caught!

And as I caught more and more trout, and more and more sun, I got a little goofy. Oh look! TROUT, looks yummy! (DISCLAIMER: I did not harm any trout in the course of our trip!)

Since we were on the river ALL DAY, I alternated between taking pictures of the scenery and fishing. The scenery was so beautiful!

Peter’s dog Oliver, or Olie for short. What a smart boat dog!

And you know, cows along the river:

Β Olie stretching his legs on a small island in the middle of the river:

And then, hubby’s first rainbow trout! Notice how he’s doesn’t want to touch his fish either? Uhuh.

And a grandfather & his grandson, fly fishing the river:

And as the day progressed, I was feeling one with nature, and the next thing I know, I’m holding my own trout! This was the largest one I caught all day!

Feeling so STYLIN with my camouflage trucker hat!

Β And, then hubby caught the granddaddy of rainbow trouts! And he couldn’t help but want to hold this one for a moment too!

All in all, a successful fly-fishing day!

Thank you for reading along. How are you re-energizing, re-connecting with nature, and decompressing?

XOXO

-Daisy Nguyen

FUN! I keep telling my husband – the kids and the dogs that are on this property won the kid-lottery and the doggy-lottery! What a great way to spend your youth!

Hhahaha, you’re so funny πŸ˜€ I used to touch all sorts of animals and dead animals for that matter, when I was little. It didn’t seem to bug me, now it’s kind of grows, weird how people change πŸ˜€
Fishing has been always boring for me, because the people were boring. It really matters who you’re going fishing with, you had a great time πŸ˜€
